Notary Public Day was created in 1974 to “recognize notaries for their public service and their contributions to national and international commerce.” The date of November 7 was chosen as Notary Public Day in recognition of the day in 1639 that the first notary public was appointed in America .

There are nearly 4.8 million notaries public in the United States . Over 34,000 of these are commissioned in Oklahoma . These individuals serve as trusted public officials. Transactions that are essential to the normal function of our everyday lives would not be possible without the skill and attention of a notary public.

Today’s notaries are indispensable to the free flow of commerce and to the many personal transactions that transpire in daily life. Just consider the broad range of sensitive activities that require a notary’s services:

  • Adopting a child
  • Purchasing a home
  • Granting a power of attorney
  • Striking business deals, large and small
  • Administering oaths

Times and technology have certainly changed the way society conducts business. The role of the notary in acting as an impartial witness, the significance of a notarial seal being placed on a document, and the confirmation of the document signer’s identity continue to be an important factor in preventing fraud.
